Private Attorneys

Private Attorneys are an integral part of the services we provide.  Because these attorneys offer advice over the phone, provide educational workshops and take cases, these attorneys allow SVLAS to provide more services to clients.  The communities of Southwest Virginia owe a debt of gratitude to these attorneys who have made the decision to serve low income families.

Some of these attorneys provide Pro Bono (volunteer) services to clients.

Others work under the Judicare program and provide services for a reduced fee.

If you would like to join either, or both, of these programs, please click here for the information you need to enroll in the SVLAS Private Bar Involvement Program.

Private Attorneys can also contribute to Legal Aid by arranging for their client trust accounts to be a part of the Interest On Lawyer Trust Accounts (IOLTA) program.  Click here to find out more about IOLTA.

Southwest Virginia Legal Aid Society, Inc.

Providing free civil legal services since 1972

SVLAS encourages law school students to apply for internships during the Summer.  Some interns can expect to work in the centralized intake unit actually doing eligibility determinations and giving legal advice over the telephone (under attorney supervision, of course).

Other interns do research and attend court hearing with lawyers.

The job duties are varied but the experience is invaluable.  We can offer some paid internships and have been fortunate to have interns with Equal Justice America Scholarships, as well.
